TCA Prepares for New Administration Under Trump Presidency

With Donald Trump’s inauguration as U.S. President on January 20, the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) is ready to advance the priorities of the truckload industry under the new administration.

TCA's Commitment to Advocacy

In a recent press release, TCA congratulated President-elect Trump and pledged to work with his administration and Congress to address critical trucking industry issues. TCA emphasized the importance of a balanced regulatory framework and collaboration to enhance safety, drive economic growth, and support the trucking industry’s vital role in keeping America moving.

Key Issues and Predictions

Independent Contractor Status

Under the Biden administration, the Department of Labor issued a rule complicating independent contractor classification, threatening entrepreneurial freedoms. TCA predicts Trump will reinstate the simpler, two-factor classification rule, supporting independent drivers.

Environmental Regulations

The EPA’s Phase 3 greenhouse gas standards rely heavily on costly battery-electric vehicles, presenting challenges for carriers. TCA anticipates revisions under Trump to make compliance achievable with internal combustion engines and renewable diesel while extending timelines.

Infrastructure

The $1.2 trillion Investment & Jobs Act allocated $110 billion for infrastructure, but TCA expects Trump to influence future bills by reducing environmental provisions and increasing funds for highway and bridge expansions.

Truck Parking

The bipartisan Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act proposes $755 million to expand parking nationwide. TCA expects continued bipartisan support for this initiative under the Trump administration, given Vice-President Elect J.D. Vance’s co-sponsorship.

Speed Limiters

While TCA supports speed limiters, the Biden administration faced delays in advancing related regulations. Under a Trump administration, with Republican opposition to the technology, further rulemaking is unlikely.

Lawsuit Abuse

TCA anticipates Trump will back legislation to curb “nuclear verdicts” by enabling lawsuits to be brought into the federal court system, supporting tort reform efforts long championed by the trucking industry.

Size and Weight Limits

Historically, Congress has resisted raising truck size and weight limits. However, with Republican support, TCA predicts potential advancements in pilot programs to test increased weight limits.

Moving Forward

TCA remains dedicated to fostering collaboration with policymakers to address these critical issues, ensuring the trucking industry thrives under the new administration while continuing to keep America moving forward.
